PETALING JAYA: Police have identified a man in connection with a rape threat made against Selangor State exco member Rodziah Ismail.
However, she slammed Selangor police chief DCP Datuk Khalid Abu Bakar for moving too slowly in the investigation.
The rape threat was made against Rodziah when she was involved in helping to relocate a Hindu temple in Shah Alam a few months ago.
“I met Datuk Khalid a few weeks ago and I asked him about the status of my complaint. I have provided the police with evidence. I hope they can speed up the investigation and the man will be taken to court soon,” she told The Malay Mail yesterday.
However, Khalid said the Selangor police have never treated the Opposition parties unfairly.
“Every investigation has its own merit, sometimes it can be a long one. Every detail is important. I hope the Opposition leaders will not make unfair comments about the police. Let us all be patient.”
Khalid confirmed that the police have already identified the man, in his 30s, behind the sexual threat against Rodziah but are waiting for the okay from the Deputy Public Prosecutor before taking action against the man.
Meanwhile, another Selangor State government exco member, Teresa Kok, said she was glad that a 35-year-old man, who allegedly posted a death threat against her in her blog, had been arrested on Dec 16.
“As long as the case is solved, I am more than happy to hear it,” she said, adding that the Selangor police chief had informed her of the arrest on Tuesday night.
“It shows that the police have taken my report seriously.”
The suspect was released on bail after his statement was recorded.

(Parliament, Saturday): After his suspension as UMNO member was halved to three years by the UMNO Supreme Council for the corruption offence of money politics in last year’s UMNO party elections, Tan Sri Mohamed Isa Samad said: “If they want me to resign, I will resign. I have no problem resigning from the post.”
Two days ago, the embattled Minister for International Trade and Industry, Datuk Paduka Rafidah Aziz, told the New Straits Times in an interview: “If the Prime Minister asks me to resign, I will certainly resign.”
Both statements are utterly meaningless. They give the impression that both Ministers are very generous in being prepared to do the government in general and the Prime Minister in particular a great personal favour by agreeing to resign in the circumstances they described, when under the Westminster system of parliamentary democfacy that Malaysia practises, both would have no option but to resign or be sacked.
There are at least three public-interest questions about Isa’s position, two of which relates to his Cabinet post, which call for answer from the Prime Minister:
Firstly, since his six-year suspension as an UMNO member by the UMNO Disciplinary Board on June 24 after he was found guilty of vote-buying and using agents in the UMNO party elections in September 2004, why was Isa allowed to continue as Cabinet Minister although he was immediately suspended from all party posts, including his UMNO vice-presidency and as Teluk Kemang UMNO division head. I understand that Isa had not attended a single Cabinet meeting since his party suspension 15 weeks ago. If so, why the precedent of a non-Cabinet-attending Minister?
Secondly, why must Isa take a week to resign as Federal Territories Minister and not immediately? What is this “unfinished work” he has in the Federal Territories Ministry when he had 15 weeks since his suspension as UMNO member to clear them?
Thirdly, as money politics is corruption, will the Anti-Corruption Agency (ACA) be given a free hand to investigate and prosecute Isa under the corruption laws of the land?
Isa’s need for a week to clear up “unfinished business” reminds me of the most unhealthy practices by some outgoing Mentri Besar or Chief Minister who were being transferred to the federal level and heading a caretaker state government during the general election period between dissolution and polling. There have been instances where the outgoing Mentri Besar or Chief Minister had abused their caretaker government powers by taking the most improper and probably illegal decisions such as to alienate land or conduct transactions involving state resources.
In the interests of promoting a national integrity system, the Prime Minister must tighten up rules and procedures making it unlawful and a corruption offence for any caretaker Mentri Besar or Chief Minister to alienate land or contract transactions affecting state resources during the caretaker period.

Landslide for Isa

PORT DICKSON, Oct 11 — Barisan Nasional’s (BN) Tan Sri Mohd Isa Samad has won the Bagan Pinang by-election by a landslide of more than 5,000 votes, snapping its losing streak in peninsula Malaysia since Election 2008.
The huge margin of victory will give Umno in particular a big boost, which it hopes will mark the party’s revival.
Unofficially, BN retained the Bagan Pinang state seat after Isa defeated Negri Sembilan PAS chief Zulkefly Omar by over 5,000 votes.
Today’s results will also mark the return of Isa to active politics since his suspension from Umno in 2005.
A mentri besar for 22 years, he left the state administration after the 2004 general elections to become the federal territories minister, but resigned from the government after he was suspended from Umno for his involvement in vote buying — a widespread practice which the party is trying to curb through a constitutional amendment expected to be passed early next week.

Isa Samad’s Money Politics

Uhm, just to refresh your mudah-lupa memory:
The seven corruption charges of money politics and vote-buying which the UMNO Disciplinary Board had preferred against Isa are:
* Allowed his political secretary Mohd Salim Sharif to pay RM300 to each delegate from the Telok Kemang division to the Umno General Assembly on or about September 2004;
* Allowed his agents to pay various amounts of money to delegates from the Cameron Highlands, Kuala Lipis and Bentong divisons to the UMNO General Assembly on September 11.
* Allowed his agents to pay RM1,000 each to delegates to the Umno General Assembly at the Crown Princess Hotel at 11 pm on September 22 and the morning of September 23.
* Permitted his agents to pay RM1,000 each to delegates to the Umno General Assembly at or about 1 am on Sept 23 at the Pan Pacific Hotel, Kuala Lumpur.
* Allowed his agents to pay various sums of money to Sabah delegates to the Umno General Assembly about 1 am on Sept 23 at the Legend Hotel, Kuala Lumpur.
* Allowed his agents to pay RM300 to Sabah Umno delegates at the Tanjung Aru Golf Club and the ‘Kandarah” Court, both of which are in Sabah in early September.
* Allowed his agents to pay RM300 to Kedah Umno delegates at Holiday Villa Hotel, Alor Star and Kelab Cinta Sayang, Sungai Petani around two to three weeks before the 2004 Umno General Assembly.
I’d say the amount above is just chicken feed (for UMNO’s benchmark).
This is what M Bakri Musa wrote, on the Selective Memory Apanama:
I am glad this Isa is out. Yes, Mahathir handpicked him as a promising star way back then. I did not share Mahathir’s enthusiasm then, and events have proved that my assessment is correct. Maybe Isa has been in power for too long and succumbed to the temptations of his office, like all the others. Or he thought that the loot was his due, this too is just like the others! His legacy in Negri Sembilan (NS) is nothing to shout about, or more correctly, simply nothing.
On a personal point, when Mahathir was considering Isa to be the chief minister of my state, there were two other top contenders. Both were my classmates at Tuanku Muhammad School, Kuala Pilah. Both were excellent, smart, and more importantly, politically adroit with the kampong folks. They had their ears to the ground. Either of the two would have been a great MB. Instead, Mahathir opted for Isa. Mark that down as another negative for Mahathir, his poor talent-spotting ability. I elaborated on this deficiency of Mahathir in my first book.

PEKAN: Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said Monday Umno Vice-President Tan Sri Mohd Isa Abdul Samad, who was found guilty of indulging in money politics should step down from all party posts.
The Prime Minister and Umno President said that he was sad because Mohd Isa was involved in money politics during the party leadership elections in September last year.
“I’m also sad that Isa was involved in money politics and that he had been punished by the (Umno) Disciplinary Board.
“As such, he has to step down from all posts in the party,” he told reporters after visiting the Defence Technologies Bhd (DEFTECH) factory, here.
The Umno Disciplinary Board announced officially Monday, Mohd Isa’s suspension from the party for six years.
Also present at the factory visit was Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
“However, he (Isa) can still file an appeal. I hope he can make his appeal immediately,” Abdullah said.
The Prime Minister said that to his knowledge, the Disciplinary Board had arrived at the decision after considering all the facts and information received on the matter.
On Isa’s position in the cabinet as Minister of Federal Territories, Abdullah said: “This does not arise at the moment because he has to file an appeal (regarding the party post).”
Asked about the possibility of a Cabinet reshuffle in the event that Isa’s appeal is rejected, Abdullah declined comment, saying: “It’s a speculative question.”-Bernama
In KUALA LUMPUR, the Board said it started its investigations into the breach of the party’s code of ethics by Isa last October.
Chairman Tengku Tan Sri Ahmad Rithauddeen Tengku Ismail said the misconduct by Mohd Isa was also discussed in detail over two to three weeks before he was called to answer the charges last Thursday.
Asked about the decision to suspend Isa that was adopted by the board in what was regarded as a short time, Rithauddeen said the period was sufficient to scrutinise the 30 complaints against Isa and his testimony.
“On June 23, they (the members of the board) heard the case of Isa and completed the hearing before the Maghrib (prayers) at 5 pm.
After the Maghrib (prayers), they evaluated the testimony and evidence given by complainants until midnight. After evaluating the evidence, they made their decision.
Rithauddeen said Isa was found to have breached Article 2, 2.1, 2.2 and Article 5 of the Umno Members’ Code of Ethics.
Article 2, 2.1 and 2.2, which relates to abuse of authority and money, among other things says:
* Party members are prohibited from abusing any authority vested in them for the purpose of garnering votes or support or using influence in any party election for themselves or others or persuading against voting for anyone in the party elections.
* Party members are prohibited from giving or receiving or allowing their wives, children or anyone else from giving or receiving on their behalf, directly or indirectly, any gifts or money from or to any Umno member:
a) regardless whether the giving of the gift is connected in whatever way to the party election.
b) regardless whether it is in the form of money, material, free fare, transport facility, service, entertainment or any other benefit, apparent or otherwise.
Article 5, which relates to functions and meetings, among other things says:
* Party members are prohibited from organising any gathering, meeting, reception and any function involving Umno members in connection with any election for any party post.
Asked how many times Isa was called to present himself before the board and whether the period of one hour and 45 minutes before the Board last Thursday was sufficient, Rithauddeen said:
“Only once … I feel there was no problem … how long do you want it?”
The Board’s Deputy Chairman, Tan Sri Zaki Tun Azmi, elaborated by saying that before concluding an investigation, the board would ask the accused whether he wanted to submit any other defence, present any other witness or give any more evidence.
“… if he wants to seek a postponement and call fresh witnesses or add evidence, we allow that. We always allow the accused to provide testimony to his satisfaction.”
Rithauddeen said the penalty imposed on Isa was proportionate to the offence.- Bernama

And it was all because Rodziah Ismail stood her ground on the temple relocation issue that led to the infamous ‘cow head’ protest outside the State Secretariat building here on Aug 28. The public bad mouthing occurred at the town hall meeting with residents of Section 23 here on Sept 5, in which Mentri Besar Khalid Ibrahim was briefing them about the issue of relocating a Hindu temple in Section 19 to their neighbourhood. Present at the meeting were Shah Alam MP Khalid Abdul Samad, mayor Mazalan Md Noor and Selangor Economic Development Corporation general manager Othman Omar. Rodziah, the state assemblyman for Batu Tiga, lodged a police report on Friday over the public insults leveled at her during the meeting. The insults and threats She said among the derogatory words thrown at her were: “Whore!” “Rodziah is “Pig!” “Slut!” “You don’t talk, Rodziah!” “I will rape you, Rodziah!” She said such intimidation was clearly to smear her name and to humiliate her. Feel unsafe and threatened “I regret very much the behavior shown by this small group of people, which makes me feel unsafe and my respectability threatened,” she told a press conference here after filing the police report. Rodziah, who heads the state Women, Welfare , Science, technology, Innovation and Culture committee, said her biggest fear is for other women. “If the public could easily throw insults and threats at a state assemblyman or state executive councilor like me, can other women feel safe when they have to face or need to deal with such people?” she asked. She said there was no respect shown at all to the mentri besar and other state leaders who were present at the meeting. Also present were 40 residents from the Indian community supporting the relocation of the temple to Section 23. There were no policemen and public order was controlled by enforcement officers from the Shah Alam city council (MBSA). “The wild behavior of just a small group had spoiled the meeting, which had opened the opportunity for an amicable dialogue. Culture of barbarism, sexism and intimidation “Their action clearly showed they were not there for a dialogue but only to disgrace the state government and to meet their political agenda,” she added. Apart from the video clips, the lewd remarks were witnessed by journalists, onlookers and MBSA enforcement officersl. “They were trying to impose a culture which smacked of barbarism, sexism and intimidation to jeopardize the harmony that has existed among the various communities. “Their act should not be condoned. They have to be stopped for the people, especially the women, to feel safe and secure wherever they are” she said. |
