the charge against anwar ibrahim sodomy allegation trial 070808 Anwar was alleged to have sodomised Mohd Saiful on June 26, 2008 (see Chart).

According to Solicitor-General II Mohamed Yusof Zainal Abiden, the prosecution has listed more than 20 witnesses.

The case is being heard at the Kuala Lumpur High Court before Justice Mohamad Zabidin Mohd Diah.

When the hearing began at 3.30pm, Anwar pleaded not guilty, additionally claiming that the charges are “evil frivolous lies by those in power”.

In his opening statement, Yusof said the prosecution will prove that traces of Anwar’s semen were found in Mohd Saiful’s rectum.

He said doctors had obtained the semen traces from tissue samples.

Yusof added that the prosecution will prove its case through direct evidence from Mohd Saiful and reports from chemists, forensic experts and doctors.

When Mohd Saiful was called to the stand, a shout of “bertaubat (repent)” was heard from the public gallery. Mohd Saiful blushed.

‘Afraid and unwilling’

Under examination, he related how he had come to meet Anwar and to work for him.

On June 26, he said he was instructed to meet Anwar at the Desa Damansara condominium at 2.30pm to discuss work.

Although he was “afraid and unwilling”, Mohd Saiful said he nonetheless complied with Anwar’s instructions and washed up in the bathroom before entering a bedroom in a towel.

“I saw Anwar wrapped in a towel. He approached me and hugged me,” he said.

At this juncture, defence counsel Karpal Singh applied for the rest of the testimony to be heard in camera. Justice Mohamad Zabidin agreed and adjourned proceedings until 9.30am tomorrow.

Earlier, Karpal raised objections after Mohd Saiful’s police report at the Kuala Lumpur general hospital was tendered as evidence.

The report states that the alleged sodomy took place at about 6pm, which differed with the time stated on the charge sheet.

DPP Mohd Yusof replied that there were many incidents involved. He said the police report was lead evidence, which led to the police investigations.

Mohd Saiful began his testimony by relating his educational background. He said he dropped out of Universiti Tenaga because of bad results.

He pointed in Anwar’s direction when asked to identify him. Anwar did not look at him.

Mohd Saiful said he was employed by Anwar between March and June 2008 as a volunteer a week before the March 2008 general election, on a salary of RM1,000.

After the elections, he was made a special officer, tasked with arranging meetings with possible defectors from Barisan Nasional.

He resigned in June, attributing this to “laziness and indiscipline’ in his letter of resignation.

Today, though, Mohd Saiful said his real motivation was because he “could not stand being sodomised”.

Hearing continues.
